Which mere criticism of

1 - There was a strata of Paris which mere criticism of books fails to get hold of. — Ezra Pound
2 - There were a few individuals criticism of whom John failed to put forth successfully. (John is trying to criticise the individuals)

For some reason 'which' sounds strange to my ears. What difference would it make if I replace it with 'whose' - ...Paris whose mere criticism of...?
