Which is which

Could you please help me with this?

1 I don't know which is which.
2 I don't know which one is Mary and which one is Sarah.
2 I don't know which one Mary is and which one Sarah is.
3 I'll tell you which one Sarah is and so by deduction you'll know which one Mary is.

Which one's are correct and can you use BY DEDUCTION??

thank you

You have the problem that "which one" can mean one out of a group of any large size, and so knowing which one is Sarah may not help you know which one is Mary. But saying you don't know is almost always safe, and so all but the last one are correct (I think), but they do not convey much useful information. Also you recently requested to be my friend.

  • I have never had a friend on this board so I do not know what is involved and the link in the email does not seem to work.

The first #2 is much more common, and natural.
