Which is the subject?

Hi dear friends

I don't know which is the subject of the underlined verbs, The books or The shelves? and if possible please clarify what the strucure is. I mean What is the form of sentences in an expanded way.

Books stood or were stacked on the shelves that ran along two walls from floor to ceiling, sat on the tables like knick-knacks, trooped around the room like soldiers.

Thank you veru much

the shelves that ran along two walls from floor to ceiling- - 'that' with its relative clause refers to 'shelves'. -- The commas place the other verbs in parallel with 'stood'.
