Which is the right answer.

Backaches hinder, disable, and even cropple millions of American people every year. Backaches affect not just the elderly- they plague young and old alike. Although there are drugs to relieve the pain of backache, they are not a cure; they can only relieve the symptoms. Every year, in the hope of a cure, 200,000 people in America undergo back surgery. In 20% of the cases, the surgery fails, and patients are left with their symptoms intact.

Accoring to this passage, drugs

---- are better than surgery to cure backaches.
---- cannot treat the symptoms of backaches.
---- should not be used to treat backaches.
X - are not strong enough to cure backaches ( I chose this one. )

Here's more..

Carmelite nuns must be cloistered from the world. Visitors to the convent are not permitted and conversation is forbidden, even at mealtimes. On those rare occasions when nuns are allowed to speak to visitors, they must speak through an iron rail. Of course, letters and phone conversation are not permitted. They spend their days doing chores or saying prayers.

The main point of this paragraph is

---That the rules of the Carmelite order are far too strict
--- That carmelite nuns lead lives of isolation and silence. ( I chose this one.. )

--- That the rules of the Carmelite order imply that speech is a sin
---that carmelites should not live such isolated lives

I think your choices are correct. I don't think it's entirely accurate to say that drugs "are not strong enough " to cure backaches -- soemtimes they are just not the appropriate treatment -- but that's clearly the best answer of the choices given. )

I don't really like any of the options for the first one, but the one you chose seems to be the best of the lot.

I'd say you chose the best option for the second text as well.
