It's hard to say because I don't think anything "causes" Buddahood. HIV causes AIDS. Poverty causes crime. But we don't say love causes marriage, although maybe we should. The difference between "for" and "of" there is one of sense, but the sense of the whole sentence is a bit off with either one.
