- The span of his life he has been a vegetarian

then how can I use the word 'span'?

The span of his life he has been a vegetarian Not correct as written, and not really natural.

For the span of his life, he was a vegetarian. ie his whole life, from beginning to end.

The word 'span' is not used in this way very commonly.

Just happened to come across this.

"Throughout his life he has been a vegetarian" is more natural.

The other 2 sentences are quite odd. Even the last one is not grammatically correct.
