Which is similar?

Hi, teachers. Please help me.

"I didn't understand a single word of what he said."

(1)I didn't understand any words of what he said.

(2)I didn't understand one word of what he said but I understood the others.

Which is similar in meaning of the sentence above, (1) or (2)? or neither?

However, it's not meant to be taken literally -- usually!

Yes, it's possible that you simply could not make out what he was saying. A bad transmission, a difficult accent. But what is more likely is that you did understand most if not all of the words, but you couldn't make sense of them.
