Which is more natural

A: Actually, he let me have an extension on the essay.
B: Why?
A: Because I wanted include some results from my latest experiments. When I asked him after the lecture, he said it is/was okay.

For me this is a no-brainer. 'said it was'. It means 'is', but we use 'was' to match the tense of 'said'.
