a soccer match
a match of soccer

Which phrase would you use? and why?

Top answer

Always "a soccer match". "a match of + sport name" is never very natural. I'm not aware of any very logical reason.

Note that I think 'soccer' is primarily a North American term. Elsewhere, the common term is 'football'.
