Which is grammatically correct? Should I use is or are?
"A total of ten gold medals is/are rather impressive."

1.There is/are a total of five students fighting among themselves.
2.A total of five students is/are fighting among themselves.

Why are the answer 'are' not 'is?

1.There is/are a total of five students fighting among themselves. (Five students are fighting. The total refers to the five number of students who are fighting.)

2.A total of five students is/are fighting among themselves. (As above.)
