Which is correct usage - Tons or Tonnes (1000 Kilo grams)

Hello,
In Invoices, some suppliers mention the Quantity as 5 Tons (for 5000 k.g) whereas some peope printing the same thing as 5 Tonnes.
Which is the correct English ?
