The second sentence could work if you added a determiner before "performance."

It depends on the context, but I was thinking of e.g. "our performance", "my performance", "the team's performance" ...etc.

My feeling, in approving the #2 sentence, was that in my business experience, 'performance' is a goal for the division/department over which he is the boss. Profit is essential, Performance is necessary to obtain Profit. Different strokes, I suppose.
