Anonymous There are a couple of trees in the yard. This one is correct. Some native speakers, however, in a moment of carelessness, or sometimes as a habit of carelessness, leave out "of".

I speak American English and I live in America, so I don't know where else the 'of' of 'couple of' might be dropped. You'll have to ask someone who speaks a different variety of English if they have observed the same thing where they live. It's possible that this happens in other places in the world, but we have no proof of it so fa

I am from England, and, for me, the omission of "of" feels distinctly American.
