Which are correct please? Do the options mean the same thing?

The week leading up to was hard.

The week before was hard.

Will science be able to increase life expectancy in the future?

Will life expectancy increase in the future?

I don’t understand/am not understanding a word she says/is saying.

He isn’t the type of person to think that far ahead/in front.
