Which is correct here? Immigrate or Emigrate

Hey I have a small problem here. Which sentence is correct?

1. Between the years 1820-1932 more than 300.000 Danes immigrated to America.

or

2. Between the years 1820-1932 more than 300.000 Danes emigrated to America.

and

1. One might wonder how so many survived and did well.

or

2. One may wonder how so many survived and did well.

PS: I would appreciate it if someone could give me a rule that is applicable in all sentences.

Regards,

Benjamin Pedersen

Emigrate means to leave. Just remember 'e' stands for exit. Your second sentence is the correct one. "[...] Danes emigrated to America."
