Which is correct?

Hi,
Which one is correct?

1- They observed that the boiling point of water is 100°C.
2- They observed that the boiling point of water was 100°C.

I think no. 1 is a better choice because boiling point of water is a fact and it does not change. Something like conditional sentence type zero.
