Hi, Using the first one you're referring to the moment before now(the moment of speaking) which is called past simple, but in the second one you're referring to a moment before another in the past (called past perfect). Using the first one you're referring to the moment before now(the moment of speaking) which is called past simple, but in the second one you're referring to a moment before another in the past (called past perfect).
Both of them are correct and you can use either of them according to your use.
