Which is correct?

#1. We can cook best in the dorm.
#2. We can cook the best in the dorm.

I know that there should be "the" before the superlative forms of adjectives or adverbs, but my grammar book considers the second one to be the grammatically correct answer.

Can anybody explain why the second one is correct?

It depends whether you mean that you produce better food after cooking in the dorm than elsewhere, or that you are the best cooks of all the people who are in the dorm.
