Which is correct?

May I know which is correct?:

  1. the 1960s was a turbulent time in the US

  2. the 1960s were a turbulent time in the US

  3. the 1960s were turbulent times in the US

Hi, None are correct, because you need to start with a capital letter and end with a period. You would lose marks in an exam or in an essay if you wriote this way. Apart from that, I would accept all three versions.

Thanks, Clive. Does that mean that it is ok to treat 1960s as either singular or plural? Would there be any difference in spoken and written English?

Hi,

I think that in careful speaking or writing, 'were' would be more likely. But you'll hear 'was' in casual speech.
