Which is correct?

I am an American living in England. My stepson was writing to a friend and asked How are your family? I told him I believed the correct way to say it was How is your family? He asked his english teacher the next day and she said, How are your family was correct. Which of these is correct?
How are your family? or How is your family?

What i understand is that the question that you had said is the correct one, ie.,

How is your family?

You can either say " How are your family members ? " or " How is your family ? "

" How are your family ? " is a wrong english.

Which is correct depends on where you are. Now that you're in England, "How are your family?" is correct. When you move back to the U.S., change back to "How is your family?"
