The first, definitely. Using on with evening doesn't sound natural at all to me.

I think it should.

On is often used with evening, morning, afternoon and night if certain requirements are met.

1. adjective: He likes to sit and read a book on warm afternoons.
2. day of the week: He takes a walk on Monday mornings.
3. other modifier, such as a month or an article: It happened on a January morning. It happened on a cold morning.
4. of-structure, or the of-genitive, as it is often called by European grammarians: I'll see him on the morning of July 2.

There are other cases.

But much more common and less wordy is
eg Last Saturday we went to the park for a picnic.That evening, we watched TV.
