Which is better?

1. They learned that the earthquake hit the country badly and that many people died in the rubble.

2. They learned that the earthquake hit the country extremely and many people died in the rubble.

I am wondering if the word "that" is needed in the first sentence. What is the different use of the two words " badly" and "extremely" ?
