which heavy rain, this one or that one?

Hi,

Please check the following and tell me which one do you prefer? I think rain is uncountable here?

A heavy rain began to fall suddenly.

The heavy rain began to fall suddenly.

Heavy rain began to fall suddenly.

If you chose No. 1, can an insertion of an adjective like heavy in the example trigger a change from an uncountable noun to a countable noun?
