I found one question in an old exam that puzzled me. The question is:
"Most of the food we eat is produced used mechanized farming methods."
The question asked you to change the underlined part into correct form. I know that it should be changed to "using" but don't know why. I would greatly appreciate your help in identifying the grammar point or the reason for the answer. Thank you very much.
" As written "is produced used".... Well that just puts it in the goofy basket of bunched-up verbs. "Is produced using" flows with one verb and so does: "Most of the food we eat is produced by means of mechanized farming methods.

"Using" strikes me as an adjective or a gerund and has a synonym "by means of." As written "is produced used".... Well that just puts it in the goofy basket of bunched-up verbs.
"Is produced using" flows with one verb and so does: "Most of the food we eat is produced by means of mechanized farming methods.
BTW: Don't trust me.... I'm not even close to being an English
anonymousMost of the food we eat is produced (by) using mechanized farming methods.
There is an implicit preposition (by) after 'produced'. The only verb form possible after a preposition in the participle (-ing form).
