Which form of to or too is correct?

The sentence that need correcting is as follows: My ears rang with crickets, and my eyes stung from staring ( to or too) long. Please advise and provide proof if possible.

Your sentence is taken from the book 'Fireflies' written by Julie Brinckloe. Evidently, you must use here the adverb "too", that means ' more than enough, excesively'. The preposition 'to' ( meaning towards ) doesn't make sense at all.
