Which explained / explaining

While writing an essay, I came across the follow sentence:
I came across an article which explained the difference between ‘bring’ and ‘take’

I think you can say 'which explained' as well as 'explaining', can't you?
Is there a difference between these two?

...there is also a close link between bring/take and come/go.
