Which comes first: the COMMA or the PARENTHESIS?

Do I properly place the comma before or after the second bracket?

"My son, Elijah (5 years old), was admitted to the emergency room."

Or

"My son, Elijah (5 years old,) was admitted to the emergency room."

The first is correct. Treat all the words inside a pair of parentheses as if they were a single word. You wouldn't put a comma in the middle of a word would you?
