Please, tell me do these two sentences have the same meanings?

They are not the same at all in American English, but I think maybe the British use "read" like that. Wait for a speaker of BrE to confirm that.

I've never hear anyone use the term 'read' like that.

But when I was in University, we asked people their major by saying

Q - What are you reading?

A - I'm reading History.

This may now be a bit old-fashioned.

This is possible in British English.
