Which bold word/s should I use?

In (the) olden times / (the) olden days, in Japan, the counting system was different from the current system because 2000-2013 is 14 years because 2000 is considered as the first year. This is much like the Chinese system.

Which bold words should I use? And is "the" needee?

Thanks.

'In former times' would be more natural, in my opinion. By the way, 2000-3013 would still cover fourteen years, wouldn't it?
