Which article with demonstrator?

I have another question about articles. I am sorry: It is very difficult for me because there are no articles in my native language.

"During clashes in the state between riot police and the demonstrators, one of the demonstrators was killed. An investigation was launched to determine how the actions of the police could have lead to the death of the/a demonstrator."

I think "the" is more correct English, but I also think "a" is possible. Am I right in saying this?
