Which article with "bike"?

Hello, I have a question about articles. Someone tells me he stole a bike. I ask:
"Why did you steal a bike?"
Or do I ask him:
"Why did you steal the bike?"
Which is correct English? I think I can use either article. It depends on how specific that bike is to me.

But I think I would use "a bike".

A fellow I know to be a delinquent walks up to me, pushing an almost-new, fancy, expensive bike.
I know he cannot afford something like that. I say, "Where did you steal the bike?"
