Which answer is correct?

Hi there.
I came across some "fill in the missing words" sentences. Most of them I could solve, but I'm not sure about these ones:

Everybody was there ... my best friend who couldn't come.

No, no-- you're right, Fandorin. C is correct. I missed that one, probably because there was no comma.

I'm a bit surprised that there is no right answer for two of the sentences...

I mistook, Rife; only the first has no correct answer. 'Besides' means 'including', but what is needed is 'except', which means 'excluding'. The best friend was not there.
