"the match was cancelled on behalf of bad weather" or"... due to bad weather" which is more appropriate.

'...due to/because of bad weather.'

'I am writing on behalf of my mother, who has unfortunately broken her arm.'

Due to is the answer. On behalf of is completely inappropriate.

Some English speakers think that "due to" must have a noun to work with: The cancellation was due to (owed its existence to) bad weather. The match was cancelled on account of (not "on behalf of") bad weather.
