Can whether be replaced by either in one or both of the following?

Can they be seen as reductions of the following?





a. Any man, regardless of whether he is liberal or conservative, would agree with me

Consider these simplified examples..

I want to buy a car, either red or black. I'm looking for a red one or a black one.

I want to buy a car, whether red or black. It doesn't matter if it is red or black.
