Whether zoos should be closed down?

Some people think that zoos are all cruel and should be closed down. Others however believe that zoos can be useful in protecting wild animals. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Whether zoos should be maintained has become a subject of heated debate in recent years. One school of thought says that zoos play an essential role in preventing wild animals from being harmed by human activities. However, I strongly believe that zoos have been creating a toxic living environment for wild animals, and thus, should disappear.
On the one hand, zoos are somewhat helpful for wild animal conservation. So far, there has been an increasing concern about wild animal trafficking, where humans try to harm wild animals to take out their body parts for different purposes. For instance, bear bile could be used as a type of medicine, crocodile skin or snakeskin could be used to make handbags, shoes, or fox fur could be used to make fashionable clothing. Therefore, some people believe zoos might be a good place to keep wild animals safe, especially endangered species that are being put on a brink of extinction.
On the other hand, however, I completely admit that zoos could not be considered an ideal habitat for wild animals as they are serving human purposes more significantly than the nature conservation purposes. It is widely accepted that there is always a conflict of interest, where the economic and natural purposes fight against each other. And when the economic purpose is put on a higher priority, the animals are more likely to be used as an entertainment tool for humans, and no longer are literally wild. Wild animals living in captivity tend to lose their natural traits such as hunting skills, herd connections. Furthermore, they might be abused if they did not follow human commands.
In conclusion, zoos could be useful to protect wild animals from being trafficked, but the way zoos are executed has counter effects on the animals themselves. They could not live in a truly wild habitat, and they might be harmed by entertainment activities in the zoos.
