Whether VS whether or not

1. I do not know whether they will be here.

2. I do not know whether or not they will be here.

May I know which one, whether or whether or not, is more suitable in written English or scientifical writing?

My preference is to use whether and or not . Without the 2nd half, it is just like saying if , which is fine. I think it has just come out of use by many writers.
