Whether correct or not

"It was gentle of you to buy dinner for me."
Is this sentence is correct or widely used? If not, why?

(I hear "It was generous of you to buy dinner for me." is correct.)

No. It is not correct, so of course it is not widely used as it is not used at all. The reason is that "gentle" is not an appropriate word in that situation.

It was [generous / kind / nice] of you to ... are the usual formulas.
