We stopped as well at several villages along the way, where we were warmly greeted by the hospitable Dawu people and invited for a meal of flying fish.

Is "where" in the above equal to "in which" and "in that?" If not, could you explain why in a few words? Thanks.

'In that' is not English in this construction. 'In which' is possible, but 'several villages' is a distinct 'where'.

You can't take many liberties with word order in English, Angliholic. I don't think native ears would like along the way being placed between the relative where and its antecedent (villages). Where should preferably follow villages. As well is usually at the end of a clause: I would like to see him as well.

How about this: Along the way, we also stopped at several villages where we were warmly greeted by...

You can replace where with in which. However, when that is a relative pronoun, you can't put a preposition before it. These are correct examples:

This is the village where he lives. | This is the village in which he lives. | This is the village which/that he lives in.
