Wherein which vs. where

Hello everyone,

I would like to enquire about the precise meaning and usage of 'wherein which'.

My sentence is:

The theory has been criticised outside the European context, wherein which it was originally developed.

Would it make any difference to simplify this sentence by replacing that expression with 'where'? I.e is the writer just trying to play around with words?

Looking forward to hearing your views.
