Does wherein work here?

He lives somewhere in Africa, but I don't know wherein.

Is this the correct usage of the possessive?

You'd need to say it as

eg I think it's Mary from Personnel's bag.

eg I think it's Kirsty from Sales's bag. We often say this, but I'm not sure I'd call it standard. Per

I'm pretty sure MM told me this was correct usage. The whle noun phrase owns the bag. But your re-write certainly seems better.
