'...where/how to start...'

Should I say,

1) 'I was staring at the handout yesterday and had no idea where to start the case study. '

or

2) 'I was staring at the handout yesterday and had no idea how to start the case study. '

Also, just wondering if it sounds natural as something you would start a conversation with.

Thank you

PBF: Both are correct, but have slight different meanings. "where" means "at what point should I begin". "how" means "what method should I use"
