Where should I put "both?"

You can make friends with strangers just because (. ) the same books.

1) you both have read
2) you have both read

It seems to me that "both" is misplaced here. If you used the singular "a stranger" instead of plural "strangers", then the determiner/pronoun "both" would be ok.
