Where to put a comma?

In the below sentence, I'm struggling to understand where I should put a comma?

a) We had to register the birth, and unforgivingly the death, of our James.

or

b) We had to register the birth, and unforgivingly, the death of our James.

Which is better?

(a) is better in my opinion. However, I wonder if "unforgivingly" is the correct word. You may mean "sadly", "tragically", or a similar word.
