Where should the phrase be connected?

Hi~ With the comma behind the phrase "during the conversation", it seems that the phrase is a part of the former part of the sentence. But it doesn't seem to make sense to me. How should I understand the phrase?

As a part of the former part of the sentence OR a part of the latter part of the sentence?

Thanks for your comments in advance~
