Where should I put "assistant"?

Dear Teachres,

I saw a phrase "Teacher assistant", whe I checked on line there is also a phrase "assistant teacher". After my further research, I found that the position of the word "assistant" is sometimes in the front of a noun (assiatant manager, assistant profesor, assistant general) and sometimes after a noun (administrative assistant, sales assistant, personal assistant).

My question is: Is there any rule where to put the word assistant? (I mean is it if it is a rank ,then should put before it, and if it is just a noun -- well, not like a noun as a rank noun, have to put after it.)

Thanks for anyone who can help.

No rule, ong, sorry. Either format can be an official rank; it depends upon the institution and how they have denominated their positions. Some of them can be quite different.

  • An assistant professor is probably also a professor, but a professor's assistant is probably not.

Thanks a lot Mister Micawber. I was the one who asked the question. So, it means I can say: assistant administrative, assistant sales, manager assistant etc just depends on the organisation or company. Right?

No. Sorry if I mislead you. It is not your choice - you must check with the company to see what titles they use, and if you are translating, you must check whether the titles are in Engish use in general. For insta
