Vocabulary

where homeless people sleep

Dear teachers,

I'm looking for the English word for a place where homeless people spend the night, not in a shelter or building but outside of it. For example under a bridge or in front of a shop.

Can you help me?

There's no specific word. "On the street" is a common phrase, though. They sleep on the street.

They sleep on the street. (Meaning anywhere that is not a shelter.)

Thank you for your answer!

But imagine that there is a picture showing the "bedroom" of these people, that is the place where they sleep. Is there another expression in English meaning exactly this?

No. Is there in your language?

Yes, there is. It's "Schlafplatz", literally: "sleep" + "place"

I'm German.

We do say: the homeless that do not avail themselves of homeless shelters are "street people." The live (and sleep) "on the street."

Anonymous "Schlafplatz"
I don't think that refers solely to a place where homeless people sleep.

We can speak of 'a place to sleep' in English, That, too, does not refer solely to a place where homeless people sleep.

You're right, 'Schlafplatz' refers to any place where you sleep. But 'place to sleep' is a good way of expressing what I wanted to say in English. Thank you all!
