Where have you been?

My mom and I were both at the house but she didn't know I was in my bedroom.

Mom asks: Where have you been?

Should I reply with:

I've been sleeping the whole time. Or

I was sleeping whole time.

Either is fine. The first answer has a verb form that matches the verb in the question, so that would be my choice, probably.
