Where / from where / from which

Hello, experts~

Could I get some help here?

I've got some trouble telling the difference between the following sentences.

I hope someone could help me here, kindly.

1) The post office from where I sent you the package is down the street.

2) The post office where I sent you the package is down the street.

3) The post office from which I sent you the package is down the street.

If I'm not wrong, we don't use sentence No. 3 because it's grammatically wrong.

On the other hand, sentence No. 1 and 2 are acceptable and we can use them both.

Am I right on the track? If that is the case, what is the difference between sentence No. 1 and No. 2?

And could you elaborate on why sentence No.3 is not acceptable, if possible?

I need another clarification here.

According to some reference I've got, sentence No.4 is correct but No.5 is not.

4) The post office where people send mails is down the street. (O)

5) The post office from where people send mails is down the street. (X)

Why is this so ? Please correct me, if I'm wrong.

Thank you for your precious time in advance.

hohok 1) The post office from where I sent you the package is down the street. This is garbled and verbose. For one thing, a post office is a thing and therefore takes "which", not "where".

  • hohok 2) The post office where I sent you the package is down the street.
  • This probably does not mean what you want it to, and it is a poor way of saying it, to boot.
