Where exactly is "out east"?

I read the following sentence somewhere:

It all started when my 13-year-old girl and I were on a trip out east for a small vacation...

What does "out east" here refer to ? Does it mean "going out to the east part of the country"? Many Thanks.

I'm sure it depends on the nationality of the author. In the U.S., usually one refers to going "out west" and "back east," but not always. Someone who is a native of California, on the west coast, may think of traveling to the east coast as going "out east." Your interpretation seems reasonable, unless what follows makes that an obviously wrong conclusion.

In Canada, we say 'out west' and 'down east'.

Out East, is a local term for Long Islanders meaning "he Hamptons". Most people that have homes there dont refer to it as the Hamptons, but as out East.
