I think I'd as likely as not write this as "wherever" too. Does that seem wrong to you? Maybe I've never had this usage correct...

It did seem wrong to me but I checked the Random House Unabridged Dictionary and it accepts your usage, too.

Where ever as an adverbial phrase has no currency.

Those two adverbs came together centuries ago to produce the compound adverb 'wherever' meaning in or to whatever place.

It can also be used for emphasis instead of 'where' in questions, as well as a minor usage as a conjunction.
